Stomach Infection
Many people around the world suffer from viral or bacterial gastroenteritis. The stomach bug can have a number of causes, be it diet habits or poor food hygiene. Although it is less likely to bring on frequent diarrhoea, it can still be uncomfortable.
About gastroenteritis
Diarrhoea, often accompanied by nausea or vomiting, headaches and a mild fever, are common symptoms of an infection in your stomach and intestines known as bacterial or viral gastroenteritis. In most cases, you’ll get better in a few days without the need for a doctor but some vulnerable groups, including young children, the sick and the elderly, will need medical advice. You should seek medical advice if you experience fever or blood in your stool.
What causes gastroenteritis?
The most common causes of gastroenteritis are:
- Food poisoning
- Travellers’ diarrhoea
- Viral infection
Is it infectious?
Unfortunately, gastroenteritis can be extremely infectious. If you do catch it, then it’s best to make sure you wash your hands after going to the toilet and especially if preparing food for other people. If possible, try to stay at home as much as you can until the diarrhoea and vomiting has stopped. Keeping yourself hydrated is key in preventing dehydration when you have diarrhoea.
